Just before leaving the U.S., my mom and I went to a farmer´s market near our home in Colorado. There was a woman there selling small, purple potatoes. With much joy, my mom and I picked out the smallest (about the size of a quarter)and most purple ones we could find and brought them back home to eat for dinner. Here in Bolivia the other day, I visited a few small towns outside of Cochabamba called Los Pueblos del Valle Alto. In the pueblos there were many women sitting on their blankets in the market also selling potatoes. When I saw this, a huge smile came across my face because all of their potatoes were the same size as the ones my mom and I had picked out back home in Colorado. "How Andean we are," I thought to myself with glee.

Later I learned that a test mother-in-laws give to their future daughter-in-laws is to see if they can peal the skins of these very small potatoes in long, thin strands (best if you can get all the skin off in one strand). If so, then they will be good and hard working spouses. I´m not sure what I think about this test.

  1. a potato-grating test! wow, i would fail, grate my thumb off instead, and never become an Andean wife. lucky thing the Congolese test has more to do with goats. i think.

    grama-hugs! Amy
